"Painted as a companion piece to Green Knight, this painting has the same composition, and is within the Authurian genre as well, but shows the moment in which Merlin comes to take Authur from his father in the early dawn of New Years. In contrast to other depictions of this subject I chose to show a tender moment exchanged between the ancient druid and the infant king. Merlin bears the light of the kingdom of Camelot to come (The 'Gleam' of Tennyson's poem.) tied with mistletoe which is an ancient symbol of rebirth. The child Arthur is swaddled in the royal pendragon tapestries."
